Penampang aspires to be one of the most important industrial and commercial centres. It is also home to neighbourhoods of big and growing families. The Penampang district is family oriented for people to raise families and not too far from the city, but just enough to get away from the hustle and bustle of it.

Many retail outlets can be found and are seen growing throughout the district, particularly in Donggongon and along Penampang Lama Road and the Penampang-KK Bypass Road.

The Mega Long Mall is a shopping mall in Donggongon featuring a variety of stores including a cinema, restaurants, and more. Along the Penampang-KK Bypass Road, shopping malls such as ITCC Mall, and commercial centres such as Plaza 333 and Padimas Point can be found.

With these developments Penampang has witnessed in recent time with new residentials as well, such as Eco Peak Condominium, K Avenue and Skymillion Residence.

With these developments, Penampang does not leave out the importance of education. Penampang  offers education hubs ranging from primary to secondary schools.

The area where the school presently sits was once a paddy field. Locals gave it to the school as a gift. Despite the fact that students shared their classroom with village goats, the school had a strong reputation, with students travelling from as far as Tambunan and Kuala Penyu to study there. As a result, a boarding school was established.

SM St Michael developed a partnership with Yong-ho High School in South Korea and ceased their KDCA-ISEP exchange programme participation. They named the relationship a sisterhood, and in July 2008, they held an English camp for South Korean students who had arrived in Sabah.
