The "Unsung Heroes" Exhibition is a collaboration between Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) and GALERI PETRONAS taking place from 7 May - 28 July at GALERI PETRONAS for Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival 2019 (KLAF2019).
Behind every architectural vision, there are unsung heroes in the architecture and design community in Malaysia whose stories hardly gets told. The "Unsung Heroes" Exhibition at the 2019 Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival (KLAF2019), taking place from 7 May - 28 July at GALERI PETRONAS, tells the human stories behind great structures.
The exhibition, a collaboration between Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) and GALERI PETRONAS, aims to bring our attention to the importance of a building's contribution, function and effectiveness. Towards this, it showcases 'iconic architecture' that goes beyond physical uniqueness and presentation. On the contrary, it focuses on the harmony and balance between architecture and its beneficiaries — its users, disabled community and nature.
The 'Unsung Heroes' behind the exhibition are those who play a critical but indirect role in the built environment, ranging from general workers, drafters and visual illustrators to designers, young architects, modellers, and photographers. The exhibitors include 27 architecture firms, two photographers and a modellist.
"The concept of the exhibition highlights the fact that Malaysia's architecture is not only historically accommodative, adaptive and acclimatised to its surroundings but is also one that is driven by the people," said KLAF2019 Director, Ar. Dr Tan Loke Mun.
The work of arts, categorised and situated within a timeline of major developments in Malaysia, will be through digital artworks, sketches, photography, video projections, architectural models, and sculptures. It delves into the less-known stories of featured heroes, charts the journey of local architecture firms classified as mid-life, and shines a light on Malaysia's vibrant architecture industry that is dynamic, responsive and a deliberate mirror of humanity.
The exhibition convenor is Ar. Norzaini bin Mufti, while the curator is Ar. Mohamad Pital Maarof. Other curators are Wan Nur Bahiah Binti W Zulkifli, Nor Amirah Syamimi Binti Norhaidi, Marisa Diyana Binti Shahrir, Ahmad Hakym Bin Ahmad Hilmy and Ayub Bin Abdul Hadi.
