Kuala Lumpur - Today and Beyond

The City of Kuala Lumpur returns in hosting the 10th series of the International Conference on World Class Sustainable Cities 2018 (WCSC 2018). The event will be held on Thursday, 27 September 2018 at the InterContinental Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

With the official support and endorsement of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), this year's 10th WCSC conference series is aptly themed Kuala Lumpur: Today and Beyond. Cities today and its inhabitants are facing continuous challenges and pressures for further economic growth and stronger competitive advantage. At the same time, cities are expected to provide for better quality of life in an improved urban environment. This includes a conducive, inclusive and affordable living environment, excellent connectivity and ample outdoor public spaces set within a greener, cooler urban setting.

The present challenge every city, including Kuala Lumpur today, is facing is how to balance the need to provide a sustainable infrastructure and environment within the city, and the affordability gap that meets the unwavering trend of continuous migration and growth of population in the city. Cities therefore need to reinvent themselves to implement and rethink policies and innovative solutions for all issues confronting cities, to achieve the global goal of sustainable development and to implement the New Urban Agenda, an agenda that is universal and applicable to all.

WCSC 2018 will continue to explore how Kuala Lumpur and other cities in Malaysia can prepare for today and tomorrow's challenges, to be more livable, resilient, inclusive and sustainable, through better planning, technology and social innovations towards implementing the New Agenda for all.

WCSC 2018 will once again bring an exciting line up of distinguished international World Class and local speakers including panellists from South Korea, India and also Malaysia; globally renowned for their innovative ideas and solutions towards present and future urban planning issues and challenges towards providing an improved and healthier living habitat.

Some of the invited esteemed international speakers include the Honourable Mayor Park Won-Soon, Mayor of Seoul, Ms Heejin Kim, Senior Associate Principal, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF), South Korea, Daryl Carter, Chief Executive Officer of Avanath Capital Management and Past Chairman of the National Multifamily Housing Council 2018, USA.

These international speakers will share their knowledge and experiences with an expected participation from more than 550 delegates representing the built-environment industry professionals, City Managers, Government agencies, residents' groups, NGO's and city stakeholders.

As WCSC series enters its 10th year, the 3 Partner Organizations and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) have, through the years enhanced and continued with its vision and strategic partnership to share and enlighten city stakeholders, industry players, Government agencies and the general public with the main aim in creating great livable and sustainable cities.

In educating and shifting public mindsets and perceptions on the benefits and challenges faced in becoming a World Class Sustainable and Livable City, the WCSC Partner Organizations are proud to have achieved such progressive results during this past decade.

The initiatives and positive results derived from the insights and lessons learnt from the past WCSC international conference speakers have been manifested and successfully implemented in Kuala Lumpur and other cities in Malaysia including the transformation of Cheongyecheon River restoration in Seoul, Korea, that was a great prelude to Kuala Lumpur's River of Life project, Brazil's Curitiba experience for it exemplary city transportation solutions, Hong Kong and Singapore's pedestrianization projects that include covered walkway systems to make cities for the people, the metamorphosis of Kaohsiung, Taiwan from an industrial polluter to an ecological tourist hub and demonstrating that livable cities are creative and competitive.

As part of the WCSC 2018 programme, some of the concurrent events and activities being organized include the MasterClass/Workshop Session, Technica Site Visits and a Photography Competition.
