There are many things a real estate agent can do to be successful, but it all starts with the basics. When you're starting in the real estate business, there are three main points to focus on.

It took me a while to figure this out. I always thought I should go to the street and search for leads and listings. However, reality shows you that once you start, you'll have no story, no credibility and no experience to show. That can be an embarrassing moment you would want to forget. So how do we start in the real estate? Here are the three things you could do to jump start your career in the Real Estate:

1. Define your purpose

People always talk about finding your ‘why'. Why are you in the business? Why do you chose being in real estate? These questions are important, but they give you no clue where to start. You chose to be in real estate, but you are still looking for the best way to take it to the next level.

Here are 2 questions you can ask yourself:

  • What motivates you as a person and business?

  • How are you going to measure your success?

For some, success is selling a home once every month, whereas others need a million ringgits to call it a successful year. Whatever your purpose is, defend it to the end. No one else is in a better position than you to ensure that you are clear on what your values are. Next, make sure you share this purpose with others and these people will be the first to help you grow. Start breathing, living, sleeping this purpose, and make it part of your lifestyle. You will be in it for the next couple of years, so you better own it.

2. Be completely fearless

This is an important one, because you will have to step out of your comfort zone. In the beginning, this will be something you have to get used to, but this becomes part of your business as you grow.

Real Estate is a relationship business. The more relations you build, the more successful you become. Hence talking, calling and approaching people will be essential for your business. Most real estate agents fail at this point because they have the fear that they are not good enough yet, or that people will not listen to them.

But don't worry, every agent has to start somewhere. Furthermore, they took their business to the next level once they built on their relationships. Here is what they did:

  • Started meeting people

  • Telling them about their purpose (Step 1).

  • Telling them how they looked at the real estate business

  • Why they would like to work with them

In many of our articles, we cover how to approach people and start talking about real estate. After some practice and experience, you will master this skill soon enough. But first, be fearless, be unstoppable and work with passion.

3. Inspire yourself to be creative

This is not easy for everyone, but it's something you can master in a matter of time. It all starts with adapting to the idea that you need to be creative. Therefore, you need to activate your brain to allow yourself to be creative. Every person finds creativity individually, but you need to find it in your own unique way.

Some people are creative while driving, some when listening to music, and others by locking themselves alone in a quiet room. Whatever is your way, make sure you are creative in brainstorming about your business.

Why is this point so crucial to your business growth? Because you need to be unique and different from other real estate agents. You need to do things that no other agent does. And that will need creativity in the beginning. In order to get your name out there, you need to be unique because they can't judge you yet on your performance. In addition, you don't have a track record yet, so creativity helps you attract clients to willingly work with you.

Let me give you a small example of this last point. A new real estate agent that I knew in the Caribbean was ready to make business cards. He has been working for a well-known brand that had 15 local agents in one area. When he started his business, he wanted to stand out from the rest. So he came up with a business card where he was sitting behind a desk, wearing a suit, on the beach with a beautiful light blue ocean in the background. It was an eye- catcher. Every time he gave out his business card, he would get positive comments. As a result, this gave him the identity to become the ‘agent with a suit on the beach'. It was very creative and it made him unique. He immediately started growing his business on that identity.

Now make sure you focus on these three points from the very beginning and watch your business grow efficiently. You may not see the effects within one or two weeks, but if you follow these three points consitently, there will come a day when you look at your bank account and decide to buy a yacht, and go sailing around the world!
