Uem Sunrise Introduces ‘Environmental Conservation’ Pillar in Its Csr Strategy

UEM Sunrise Berhad (“UEM Sunrise”), one of Malaysia’s leading property developers, today introduced the third pillar of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy that is ‘Environmental Conservation’ in conjunction with its Plogging Day @ Kepong Metropolitan Lake activity.

The ‘Environmental Conservation’ pillar focuses on proactive initiatives to protect the natural environment around its developments and throughout its value chain. This addition builds on its two existing pillars that are ‘Education Enhancement’ and ‘Community Development’ that is reflected across its community-building efforts.

The introduction of this pillar is marked by a series of engagements beginning in Kepong. UEM Sunrise will also be partnering with environmental NGOs, non-profits, societies, universities, and schools to further strengthen its initiatives.

“We want to do our part as a property developer and responsible corporate citizen in building a sustainable Kepong community. It is part of our vision of building communities of the future which in essence, is a reminder to us to have long-lasting and wide-reaching positive impact on society,” said Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UEM Sunrise, Anwar Syahrin Abdul Ajib. “In the grander scheme of things, we eventually want to organise Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives that will tie in all three pillars to maximise our impact in our efforts.”

Kicking off this series of environmental initiatives in Kepong is the Plogging Day @ Kepong Metropolitan Lake activity. Together with students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Kiaramas, one of UEM Sunrise’s adopted schools and UEM Sunrise’s staff, over 160 volunteers went ‘plogging’ around the Kepong Metropolitan Park in the efforts to create a clean environment for the surrounding community.

For those unfamiliar with ‘plogging’, it is an activity adopted by Europeans that combines exercise and environmental activism by way of jogging while simultaneously picking up litter. This is to advocate efforts to keep the environment clean and to embrace a healthy and active lifestyle.

The volunteers equipped themselves with their running gears and several upcycle bags for the litter before setting out on the jogging track around the 95-hectare park.

Puan Rohaiza bt Zinal Abdin, one of the teachers of SMK Kiaramas highlighted the importance of outdoor activities like these where students take learning outside of their classrooms. “There is only so much a teacher can educate a student about environmental responsibility within the four walls of a classroom, but it is these little things they do where they get to practice contributing to environmental conservation.”

“We want to continue building lifelong relationships with our customers and communities that extend beyond the handover of keys to a home. We hope to bring people together from within and around our developments so that communities can live and grow in a friendly, safe and healthy environment. Nurturing this relationship with our stakeholders is what differentiates us,” said Anwar.
