Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg says plans to open a primary school for special needs students will improve student's performance by 60% by the time they enroll in secondary school.

At the launching of Datuk Amar Hajah Juma'ani Welfare Centre, Abang Johari recognized the importance of psychological technique to calm down children with special needs. With the establishment of a special needs school, these children will receive the attention they need from professional teachers that specialize in psychology and health.

"Hence, it is important that we establish a primary school that specializes in education for children with special needs, and in this case we are using the one implemented in Australia as our model" he said. By following the Australian education, special needs teachers in Sarawak will be able to identify student's abilities.

"The study has just started and the decision of the construction of a special primary school will be announced within the next six months. I have also identified the ideal location for the school that will be accessible to residents around Kuching.

"If the first project is successful, the next special primary schools will be established in major cities such as Miri and Sibu," he said. 

The new Datuk Amar Hajah Jama'ani Welfare Centre, provides welfare support services such as community based rehabilitation centre (PDK), senior citizen activities (Pawe) and free family counseling. So far 60 persons with disabilities have registered with PDK.
