Ministry Wants Rubberised Roads Built Nationwide

Plantation Industries and Commodities Ministry hopes rubber premix will be used in all road construction in the country to maximise the use of rubber produced by smallholders and stabilise prices.

Deputy Minister Datu Nasrun Datu Mansur said a ministry study showed that 1km of rubberised road uses 4.2 tonnes of rubber.

"The study is now completed, and we hope that the Public Works Department will compel all contractors building roads to use rubber. The move will benefit smallholders, and if the rubber is used in the construction of the Pan-Borneo Highway, it will invigorate the industry" he told the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday, 22 March.

He was replying to a question by Fauzi Abdul Rahman (PKR-Indera Mahkota), who asked if rubberised roads will be built extensively in the future.

Datu Nasrun said the decision is the Works Ministry's to make.
