KUCHING: The Works Ministry is proposing the use of highway information modelling (HIM) in the construction of the Pan-Borneo Highway to reduce errors and cost.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said HIM was a combination of geospatial information system (GIS) and building information modelling (BIM) aimed to minimise errors during the construction of the highway by visualising, monitoring and tracking the progress of contractors.
"HIM is a specialised project monitoring tool in tracking real-time information in a 3D environment, which includes project coordination in a collaborative environment" he said at the 4th Sarawak Business and Investment Summit here yesterday.
"By using HIM in the Pan-Borneo project, the improved collaboration between the project owner and designers during construction will minimise rework and reduce construction cost.
"The maintenance of the Pan-Borneo Highway is expected to be easier, save costs and prolong the life cycle of the roads built" he said.
Fadillah said HIM was part of the ministry's adoption of advanced technology in infrastructure development to accelerate the completion of projects and achieve cost savings in the long term.
He also said the ministry was banking on new technology, such as the intelligent traffic system (ITS), to provide innovative solutions relating to different modes of transport and traffic management, enabling multiple users to be better informed in making safer and smarter use of transport networks.
"With traffic congestion as our main concern especially in major cities, the realisation of ITS in journey planning and disseminating real-time traffic conditions, alternative route suggestions and parking space information is crucial for our citizens to be more efficient and productive" he said.
